Just Boys - Hook, Line And Sink Her (Single, 1977)
Just Boys was formed in Tampa, Florida in 1976 by Terry Carolan, Bobby Woodrich and Gary Heslin; drums/vocals. For about two years the band played frequently in the Tampa Bay area. The group also made regular trips to the recording studio, resulting in a single released in 1977 on the band’s Counterfeit Records label. Through great assistance of their quasi-manager/benefactor and friend Gary Littleton, the record had domestic and international distribution with both Bomp Records and Jem Records. Littleton’s efforts also helped spark the interest of Arista Records president, Clive Davis.

In 1979, Terry Carolan formed the True Hearts. They released a four song EP in 1980 which was expanded in 2012 by Kool Kat Music.

THE OUTNUMBERED - HOLDING THE GRENADE TOO LONG (1986)
Jangle-punks the Outnumbered formed in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois in 1982 by singer/ guitarist Jon Ginoli and singer/ bassist Paul Budin, who first met while both were reviewing records for the University of Illinois' student paper The Daily Illini. Teaming with lead guitarist Tim McKeage and drummer Ken Golub, the group played their first show that Halloween -- inspired by local heroes the Vertebrats, the Outnumbered set out to fuse the melodicism of the Byrds with the energy of the Ramones, quickly emerging as a favorite on the local underground music scene. They recorded their debut LP Why Are All the Good People Going Crazy? for the Homestead label in 1985, scoring a college radio hit with "I Feel So Sorry Now" and touring the country in support of bands including the Replacements, The Violent Femmes and Soul Asylum. Holding the Grenade Too Long followed in 1986, but as their popularity seemed to plateau at the cult level the Outnumbered disbanded a year later; a third LP, Work...Buy...Die, was issued posthumously on the local Edible label in 1988. Ginoli later relocated to San Francisco, where he formed the pioneering queercore band Pansy Division; an Outnumbered retrospective titled Surveying the Damage appeared on Parasol in 1998.-AMG

RIOT ON SUNSET STRIP OST (1967, Mono Edition)
Sixties soundtrack albums have always held a special charm, especially those released on the Tower label, from Psych-Out to Wild in the Streets to this classic, Riot on Sunset Strip. The Standells open with the title song, and it would be a refreshing change of pace to hear this clever little gem instead of "Dirty Water" for the nine millionth time on oldies and classic hits stations. While the Sidewalk Sounds come off like some bubblegum surf group, especially with the Gary Lewis sound-alike "Make the Music Pretty,""Sunset Sally" from the Mugwumps gives the album some serious credibility. Debra Travis adds a folky/earthy stamp with her one track, "Old Country," but it's the Mugwumps and songs by the Chocolate Watch Band and Standells which are the collectors items. The Standells make "Get Away From Here" sound vocally very Strawberry Alarm Clock, while Drew delivers an above-average '60s filler tune, "Like My Baby." It would fit nicely any time on some college radio retro show. Dave Aguilar's Chocolate Watch Band gives the album real grit and attitude; "Don't Need Your Lovin'" is fierce, and "Sitting There Standing" even meaner. C.W.B. took this opportunity seriously and it shows. The guitar fights the harp in this final tune, while the throbbing bass, drums, and vocal are pure garage rock magic. The novelty of the title track, "Riot on Sunset Strip," is not to be lost because of Chocolate Watch Band's over the top performance. Cool picture of The Standells on the back makes this something to put on the wall. Mike Curb's Sidewalk Productions, clearly on a mission here as the movie was hyped as "the most shocking film of our generation!," delivers vintage sounds of the day. He co-wrote the Drew title and composed the Sidewalk Sounds'"The Sunset Theme" (the word "Sunset" appearing in three song titles!). When comparing this to an early-'70s soundtrack like Zacahariah or the inconsistent '80s music put to the film Soul Man, the Riot on Sunset Strip album delivers more bang for the buck. Definitely something you want in your collection. Joe Vigilione

MEET THE BEATLESQUE (2007, Reissue 2015)
Just like i did with the Brianwilsonesque compilation, i've decided to totally revamp this collection originally available in mp3 format only. This time, only lossless files have been used and the compilation is now available in both formats mp3 (lame 3.99) and FLAC. The artwork has also been slightly changed (PPC logo has replaced the old PPL logo), and finally i've added the inner sleeve detailing all the infos about the bands involved.

Please read the original post here (16 May 2007)

In 2011, Beatlesque Again was posted here (links are dead, though), i sincerely hope i'll be able to complete  a third volume soon.

PIPER - PIPER ('76) - CAN'T WAIT ('77) [CD Reissue 2008]
Scarce CD reissue of the two Piper LP's

Boston-based Piper was a tuneful quintet whose two albums - compiled here on one CD - balanced power-pop smarts and hard-rocking swagger, sometimes with quite memorable results (The discs were previously only briefly available more than 15 years ago as pricey Japanese imports).

Billy Squier wrote a great song when he was in the Sidewinders, a song that didn't make it to their Lenny Kaye-produced RCA album but is here in all its glory. "Telephone Relation" is an exquisite pop tune, overshadowed only by the even poppier "Who's Your Boyfriend."

MIDSUMMER POLE DANCE (2015)
Nick, a regular PPC reader with strong swedish roots has decided to revisit the annual PPC "Advent Wall of Sound" at Christmas with Midsummer which is a major seasonal celebration across the Nordic countries with communities gathering to dance around the midsummer pole.

So I thought he could share this excellent idea with the PPC community to revel in 20 slices of great Swedish music - one album a day in June in the run up to Midsummer Day on 20th June as it was previoulsy planned, but delayed due to some PC crash on my side.

Each day, he has posted an album of pop perfection from a Swedish artist or band. All of them are performed in English and he has steered clear of the familiar bands like Roxette, The Cardigans etc. to demonstrate the range of top bands in Sweden.

Feel free to post any comments about this great piece of work, and please don't forget that all the credits go to Nick. And remember, ZS allows parallel downloads. Enjoy.

THE GRIP WEEDS - SEE YOU THROUGH EP (1992)
The very first Grip Weeds release. This critically-acclaimed 7" EP includes "Used to Play", "Gone from the Day" and "Hard to Take."

The Grip Weeds were formed in New Brunswick, NJ, in the late '80s, when Reil and his brother, singer/guitarist Rick Reil, joined forces with guitarist/singer Tim Mesko and bassist Mick Hargrave. After playing the East Coast club scene for a few years, the Grip Weeds recorded an EP titled See You Through for Ground Up in 1992.

Kristin Pinell replaced Tim Mesko and their first full-length album, "House of Vibes", came out on Ground Up in 1994, it was reissued in 2007 but weirdly enough, the seminal EP was not included on that deluxe reissue.

The byrdsian "Gone To Play" has never been included on any Grip Weeds collection, but "Used To Play" and "Hard To Take" were later re-recorded in 2010 for "Strange Change Machine".

ASS KICKING BONE CRUNCHING HEAVY METAL vs.
THE MOD MOD SOUNDS OF MIDDLESEX (1997)
Ass Kicking Bone Crunching Heavy Metal vs. The Mod Mod Sounds Of Middlesex is a concept album of 21 songs of 10 fictious "New Mod Acts" taht is recorded like it could have been recorded in 1962 with authentic equipment, soundboards, amplifiers, etc...

The dating of the sound is uncannily just like what you would hear on the radio in 1962....literally. The pre-Mersey sound of The Searchers, Darlene Love, Freddy & The Dreamers, Billy Kramer, etc...

Fans of the early Beatles will notice the templates of their early sounds all over this record as it serves as an archival look at what made them who they were!!

Rob Aldridge is one half of Umajets, Tim Smith (Jellyfish) is also featured.
